Field Trip: The future of energy up close – from cell production to large-scale storage systems
As part of an exciting two-day excursion, we were able to gain in-depth insights into the key technologies of the energy and mobility transition together with our students – with visits to BMW, SGS and MAN Energy Solutions.
Day 1
At BMW’s Cell Manufacturing Competence Center (CMCC), we were given an impressive insight into the high-precision manufacturing processes of modern battery cells. It became clear how essential material quality, process stability and innovation are for the cell production of tomorrow.
We continued to the SGS EMC test laboratory, where we were able to experience the complex requirements for approval, testing and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) at first hand. The precision and depth of the test procedures impressively demonstrated the importance of regulatory compliance and product safety in the development process.
Day 2
At MAN Energy Solutions, we gained exciting insights into the production of large-scale decarbonization technologies – including hydrogen-capable engines and solutions for CO2 reduction in industrial applications.
The visit concluded with a tour of a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) for industrial purposes. The visit highlighted the central role of energy storage systems as the backbone of a stable, sustainable energy system.
The excursion impressively demonstrated how technology, quality and interdisciplinary cooperation have to work together in order to put innovations into practice.
A big thank you to BMW, SGS, MAN Energy Solutions and everyone involved for these inspiring insights!
